The extremely rough conditions in the Gobi and the fact that the racks must have been more damaged in the accident than I realised meant that as i headed south through the desert, first one pannier rack broke and was dragging the case along the ground and then the other side disintegrated. British ingenuity was called for and I used some old lengths of inner tube to secure not one but two panniers on the seat behind me- only 50 mies to the next town!
